On the first day, Lammas Day, halfway between Litha and Mabon;
A time for blessing Autumn Harvests of the First Fruits;
And Hlafmaesse or Loaf Mass of Anglo-Saxon roots;
When fresh loaves were baked and rosy Apples juiced.
Welcome August
A month bringing strength and protection in Leo's name;
For Pagans, Lughnasadh, when the corn was gathered in;
Harvest straw for thatching, orchards picked clean;
Gathering Winter wood, nuts and berries, drinking mead.
Welcome August
Sultry sunny days, butterflies emerging for the first time;
Swifts and Swallows preparing to leave for their long flight;
Bramble, Elder, Hawthorn and Blackthorn berries, plump and ripe;
Earth warm as the Sturgeon Supermoon glows red in the sky.
